Living coatings for biomaterials – How to Biodesign #15

Biomaterials like mycelium and kombucha leather are oftentimes not water resistant and therefore need a coating. Biopolymers like beeswax or natural rubbers provide solutions, yet also fungi can give an interesting coating for biomaterials. How can designers apply these innovations, and how do you choose or develop a coating?

How to Biodesign series

Climate crisis asks for regenerative design. With the meetup series How to Biodesign, BlueCity Lab provides a platform for and by bioneers (pioneers in biodesign). Together with Emma van der Leest (founder of BlueCity Lab, biodesigner and writer of the book Form Follows Organism) we explore the opportunities from a systemic approach to raw material flows, making smart use of the latest knowledge and expertise about circular design, but also from biotechnology and biochemistry.

The monthly meetups facilitate interaction between bioneers who are already working and those who want to get started with biodesign and biofabrication, provide a platform for sharing stories and experiences and actively share knowledge, know-how and insights from the meetups to a broader audience.

About BlueCity Lab

With our focus shifting towards a circular economy, it is time to explore the endless possibilities of regenerative design. At BlueCity Lab, we believe that true circularity starts with regenerative design: designs that lead to a vibrant, biodiverse city in which ecological, social and economic values work together in a positive way. The former swimming pool Tropicana is a circular exemplary city in which entrepreneurs use residual flows from the city to create new products and services. In November 2020, BlueCity Lab opened the first circular built biolabs in the world for working with fungi, bacteria and biochemicals. The spaces are available for bioneers working on regenerative solutions.
