SYMBIOSIS Festival 2022 – Collaboration with nature
SYMBIOSIS festival imagines a society in which the interdependence of humans and nature is recognized and made visible in every aspect of our lives: from the products we buy, to how we live, work and vote.
Join to meet and mingle with fellow bioneers (pioneers in biosolutions) and supporters of bioneership from a variety of disciplines. Make plans, test knowledge and share your questions and needs with investors, each other and potential partners. We welcome algae, fungi, bacteria, plants, animals and even humans 😉.
About SYMBIOSIS Festival
Collaborations between organisms, algae, fungi and bacteria, plants and animals can lead to regenerative products and services such as biobased homes with a green roof, algae farms on wet peat soils and bacterial wall paint that you can use to charge your phone. Symbiosis Festival aims to be the place for encounters between bioniers, their partners and their customers.
At SYMBIOSIS festival, BlueCity stages bio solutions from her entire ecosystem which use wet and dry processes, such as fermenting, 3d printing and extractions to make circular solutions. The ecosystem meets up during talks, workshops, matchmaking events for funding and collaborations, storytelling, sharing research methods and opportunities for projects. Let’s stimulate some great crossovers between biotechnology, art, design and entrepreneurship!

14.30 – 19.00: Bioneers exhibition
Enter the world of biosolutions and check out more than 15 projects by entrepreneurs, designers and scientists from BlueCity Lab and the BlueCity community. Expect collaborations with nature in all kinds of forms and shapes, in an exhibition in our former wild water canal in the swimming pool. With Flip the City, BlueBlocks, Fabulous Fungi, Tomato leather, Hollands Wol Collectief, tree free paper, Laura Luchtman, Stain Alive, Studio Lisa Jongejans, Sporocity, Van Hier, Waterweg, Vibers and The Growcast.
14.30 – 18.30: Marketplace
How does a bank like ASN Bank support bioneers and biodiversity? Where do you get your circular lab equipment? Meet the partners of this festival and discuss with them questions like these regarding designing for biodiversity or collaborating with nature! The Circulair Loket is also present to help you move through juridical thresholds (and to warn you for potential hazardous situations) regarding working with waste streams, The GENE COOP by Waag helps you store your genetic data in such a way the big biotech companies will never be able to make money with your genes. HAN Biocentre is present to answer your questions regarding scaling your jampot experiments towards bigger bioreactors.
15.30 – 18.30: Matchmaking & networking
Did you only start bioneering, yet you want to move as fast as light? Do you have a brilliant idea on how to collaborate with nature, but are you looking for money and partners to make it real? Do you have skills that you like to connect to a bioneer? During our matchmaking & networking event, collaborations come into existence, projects emerge, you can meet the organism of your dream and the co-founder that will help you thrive.
17.30 – 18.30: Workshops
- Stain it! Make your own insect hotel with start-up Stain Alive
- Make you own mealworm farm with bioneer SoylentBlue
- Reading DNA code to identify yeast species with bioneer Kevin Correia
18.30 – 19.00: Music & lightshow by Doriene & Wouter Marselje
The SYMBIOSIS Festival will end with a breathtaking evening program. When the sun goes down, and the place gets darker, harpist Doriene Marselje, together with her brother Wouter Marselje and Wouter van Iperen, seeks the symbiosis between music and light. The audience is not only taken musically, but also visually. Wouter and Wilco have designed and built an interactive light installation and unique software to allow the harp to communicate with the installation. As a result, the music will not only be heard, but also seen.
19.00 – 20.00: Drinks
→ Tickets are €20
→ Don’t go solo, bring a friend! Get a duo ticket for €25
→ Students get 50% off with promo code: symbiosisstudent
About BlueCity Lab
BlueCity Lab is a biocircular playground for pioneers located in the heart of BlueCity. We support the transition to a biocircular economy by making work and lab space available for a growing group of pioneers. Bioniers give examples of a regenerative economy within the planetary boundaries by doing and experimenting.
The coronavirus entry pass system will apply to events at which we no longer have to stay 1.5 metres from others. This means that you will need a coronavirus entry pass to attend this event.
